Drunk Driving Death Statistics

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, someone is injured or killed in a car crash in Texas involving alcohol every 20 minutes.

In 2013, Texas was the state with the highest number of drunk driving deaths in the country. 1,337 individuals sadly lost their lives on Texas roads as a result of drunk driving. That same year, there were 99,915 arrests made in Texas for DWI violations, resulting in 71,030 convictions statewide.

In 2014, 1,014 Texans died in drunk driving accidents. 8,843 individuals sustained serious injuries in alcohol related accidents and another 6,844 sustained lesser injuries.

In 2015, there were 25,479 alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes on Texas roads, resulting in 15,687 injuries and 1,323 fatalities, a sharp increase from the prior year.

Of these crashes, over 70% of the drunk drivers in fatal accidents had BAC’s of .15 or higher. Of those drivers, roughly 70% were repeat DWI offenders.

A study published by the Department found that, in 2016 alone, 987 Texans tragically died in drunk driving accidents.

Of the 987 fatalities, 56 victims were pedestrians or cyclists, 143 were passengers in the vehicle driven by the drunk driver, and 149 were riders in cars struck by the drunk driver. Sadly, 46 of the victims were 18 years old or younger.

Texas is making some headway, however. In 2015, there were 25,479 alcohol-related car accidents in Texas. In total in 2016, there were 17,434 drunk driving accidents. Dallas alone comprised 1,310 of those crashes. This is up from the 1,250 DWI crashes in Dallas in 2015.

When do fatal, alcohol-involved car crashes usually occur in Texas?

Most DWI fatality accidents occur in Texas between 6 p.m. and 4 a.m.. Unsurprisingly, the highest rate of crashes occurred on Friday and Saturday nights during those times.

Specifically, 22.5% of all fatal DWI car crashes in Texas occur between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.
